How We Worship

Worship is the center of our life together at St. George’s. We gather in community to praise God and celebrate God’s presence in our lives.

Sunday, March 27

PALM SUNDAY HOLY EUCHARIST SERVICES – 8:00 and 10:00 AM

Wednesday, March 23
TENEBRAE – 7:00 PM

This is a prayer service in the Chapel, featuring readings from the psalms and the book of Lamentations. Candles are extinguished during the service, symbolically marking getting closer to Jesus’ death, until we are left in darkness and leave in silence.

Thursday, March 24
MAUNDY THURSDAY DINNER and SERVICE – 7:00 PM

The Maundy Thursday service with dinner is held in the sanctuary. We eat, sharing Holy Communion, and follow Jesus’ example and new commandment with foot washing. Next comes the stripping of the altar, the procession to the chapel, and the start of the Maundy Thursday Watch.

Thursday, March 24
MAUNDY THURSDAY WATCH – 10:00 PM

“Could you not watch with me one hour?” This is Jesus’ question to the disciples, when he goes off to pray in the Garden before his arrest. You are invited to sign up for an hour to come and watch and pray, in the Chapel during the night of Maundy Thursday between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM.

Friday, March 25
GOOD FRIDAY – 12:00 Noon and 7:30 PM

The Good Friday 12:00 PM service features the reading the Passion according to John as we celebrate the solemn liturgy. The 7:30 PM service also features the reading of the Passion from John interspersed with poetry and special music from the Anthem Choir. The reserved sacrament is consumed at this service.

Saturday, March 26
SETTING the SPACE and EGGSTRAVAGANZA – 9:00 and 10:00 AM

Holy Saturday is a day of preparation, and we observe this day in two important ways. One is by preparing the space and decorating the church for Easter – putting the chairs in place, setting the altar, getting the flowers together. Please come and lend a hand. The other way is by decorating the eggs to be used in the “Easter Egg Hunts” on Easter Sunday morning. This is an intergenerational event, and all children and adults are invited to come and participate!

Saturday, March 26
GREAT VIGIL of EASTER – 8:30 PM

This is the single most sacred service of the entire year. We kindle the new fire, hear the story of our salvation history, renew our baptismal vows, and celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter, in a celebration of the resurrection. Bring food to share for a reception and first Easter celebration following the service!

Sunday, March 27
EASTER SUNDAY SERVICES – 8:00 and 10:00 AM

The celebration of Christ’s resurrection will continue on Easter Sunday, with great joy that the powers of death have been defeated and that God’s love has once again emerged victorious. An Easter Egg Hunt is also held after each service. Come and celebrate in prayer, singing, and the joyful return of the kids’ instruments!

Weekly Services

There are two different worship services at St. George’s each week: 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM Communion on Sundays.

Special Services

Special services include Advent and Christmas, Holy Week, and St. George’s Day.

Worship Ministries

Worship ministries include acolytes, altar guild, greeters, readers, and lay ministers.

Music

St. George’s music program reflects the diversity that we value in worship. Our choir leads the singing each week with music drawn from many sources, including traditional songs from the Episcopal Hymnal, spirituals, music from other Christian traditions and an occasional original piece. The choir is accompanied on alternating weeks by piano or guitar.

Weddings and Baptisms

St. George’s happily celebrates weddings for straight, lesbian, and gay couples. Infants, children, and adults alike are welcome to be baptized at St. George’s.
