Throughout the month of November we will be holding a warm clothing drive to help the Prince George’s County School System meet the needs of newly arrived immigrant and refugee children who do not have clothing appropriate for our winter weather. You can help by contributing coats and jackets, new or gently used and clean, as well as hats, scarves, and gloves. The students range in age from 5 to 20, so sizes youth small to adult large are all welcome. Donations should be placed in the bin in the narthex. In addition, the school system would welcome Target gift cards which they can use to purchase other items students might need such as boots, socks, and uniforms. Target cards will be available for purchase during coffee hour and may be given to Donna or Randy Haselton or Peggy Alexander. There will be refreshments, a message from the Bishop, a meeting for the parish wardens, and most importantly, elections. Currently, Vestry Member Diane Clark is the Lay Representative for our region as well as convener of the meeting. Anyone can attend these meetings and they are good way to meet and greet members of other parishes in our region. St. George’s Cemetery Annual Remembrance Service
Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at 7:00 p.m.
Each year on or near All Saints’ Day, we remember all of those who are buried in St. George’s Cemetery at a Service of Remembrance. For the congregation it is a time to reflect on the stewardship we have given of the mortal remains of the loved ones of so many families, and to offer our prayers for them to God. The service includes the reading of the names of those who are buried in our cemetery. This service is not a mournful one, but rather one that brings a quiet joy and renewed hope as we celebrate the lives of those who have died, and give thanks for the gifts they have left to us. We hope that you will join us on this holy occasion.

It’s September and that means the Season of Creation has made its return. This year, we observe the Wisdom cycle and feature a different aspect of creation each week.
When you attend services this month be sure to take a close look at the new altar frontal, which was created by the children of St. George’s with the coaching and inspiration of Charlotte Colvin. You can see the images the children created for the various weeks of the month.
All children and young people are invited to be at church by 9:55 AM on Sunday mornings during the month of September, the Season of Creation. There will be a Children’s Procession each Sunday of this season, in which the children follow the acolytes in procession and bring objects up to the altar that connect to our theme each week, the theme for each Sunday are as follows:
- 4 – Ocean Sunday
- 11 – Storm Sunday
- 18 – Cosmos Sunday
- 25 – Animal Sunday
September 4 is Ocean Sunday to celebrate life in the seas and all our waterways. Then in the second week, we mark Storm Sunday on September 11. September 18 is Cosmos Sunday to honor the Cosmic Christ of the universe. And we end the month with September 25 and the blessing of animals on Animal Sunday.
With special regard to Animal Sunday, we are most welcome to bring four-legged friends to church for the 10:00 AM service for the Blessing of Animals. Note that it is a Sunday service this year rather than being held on Saturday. At the same time, we can also do a blessing in proxy for your animals you may choose not to bring to the service. Note: The 8:00 AM service will NOT include an animal blessing. So bring your furry creatures to the later service, only.
Parades are always fun and who doesn’t love a parade? St. George’s loves parades and we will be marching in the Greenbelt Labor Day Parade on Monday, September 5, 2016, starting at 10:00 AM. We’re registered, we have our truck, soon we will have our giveaways, but we need you to be there!
The route itself is a 1.5 mile route up Crescent Road starting from near Buddy Attick Park and ending at the Roosevelt Center. We will have our bouncy balls and pin-wheels available to hand out to the crowds, and I am crossing my fingers for cooler weather but at least the parade route has lots of shade.
Once we reach the end you’re right there at the festival where you can hop on carnival rides, enjoy great food, check out the book sale, or listen to live music. So mark your calendars and come on out on what should be a beautiful September morning to show your St. George’s pride (wear your T-shirt!) to the community of Greenbelt and beyond.

Calling all Parishioners! Please mark your calendars on Saturday, September 17, for the end of summer Church Work Day: Parish Clean-Up. Weather permitting, we’ll be doing work inside and outside the church buildings, starting about 10:00 AM and planning to finish around late afternoon, approximately 3:00 PM. A sign-up sheet for each of the projects is posted on the bulletin board in the narthex, with a large variety of ways to help, ranging from a deep detail clean of the parish kitchen to removal of debris from the parish grounds and parking lot. The Buildings and Grounds Committee hopes you can join us for any part of the day – many hands make lighter work. Thank you for considering helping our efforts to keep the church clean and in good repair.
Due to our one service on In-gathering, November 7, 2016, the first Sunday of the month, Eight O’Clock Hospitality will move to the SECOND Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 9:00 AM in Miller Hall. We still need volunteers to provide this hospitality going forward into 2017, so consider signing up in the Narthex. All are welcome!
