While it’s impossible to list all the ways St. George’s parishioners reach out to others, some ministries are part of a long-standing commitment.
St. George’s supports Help by Phone with food donations from parishioners and monetary donations from our outreach budget. Help by Phone operates eight food pantries throughout Prince George’s County with the mission of getting food to those who need it most. Help by Phone also assists with prescription costs and rides to the doctor for those who need transportation. Help by Phone runs two programs in the winter for the homeless – Safe Haven and Warm Nights – and St. George’s hosts the Safe Haven shelter for a week each winter.
We have a regular Lenten Outreach collection for a chosen charitable purpose each year. We hold special activities like making prayer beads or collecting gifts to send to deployed troops or military hospitals. Members of the parish may ask for donations to support special causes, and St. Georgians respond as individuals with generous donations for charity bike rides, marathon runs, and brave “Polar Bears” who leap into the frozen Potomac to help build environmental awareness.
